Stormkit was let out of the Medicine cat’s den once Fishpool found that she hadn’t eaten the berries. In the nursery, Stormkit wasn’t allowed to be out at all, even when Songkit got to play out in the camp. The day after she was sent back to the nursery, Fishpool came over with some news.
“Ashfeather,” She said, “I have some… Sad news.” The two she-cats walked out of the nursery. Stormkit and Songkit ran to listen in.
“… Well, they haven’t been breathing properly and today… Well, we lost Dewkit’s heart beat.”
“No.” Ashfeather whisper, her voice was filled with sorrow. “No… What about Eaglekit?”
“He’s breathing is lost, and his heart is going to fail soon.” Fishpool seemed to be covered in grief too. “I’m sorry Ashfeather.” Fishpool walked back to the Medicine cat’s den. Ashfeather came back into the nursery.
“Are they…” Songkit started to ask, but Ashfeather genitally placed her tail over Songkit’s muzzle.
“They won’t be coming back.” Ashfeather’s eyes were empty. Songkit started to cry. Even though Stormkit wanted to be brave, she couldn’t fight back the tears any longer.
That night, Songkit and Stormkit’s nest felt empty. Stormkit awoke in the darkness, but she wasn’t in her nest. She was out in a meadow. Dewkit and Eaglekit were over on the other side. But they’re dead.Stormkit thought, I must be dreaming. This must be Starclan hunting grounds. She started to walk towards her siblings. Another cat walked out of the woods and sat down by them. Stormkit couldn’t see the cat’s face. She started to run to the three starry cats. Dewkit turned around and saw Stormkit.
“Stormkit!” She cried with delight, “You’re here.”
Eaglekit didn’t seem so excited, “Did you die to?” He clearly didn’t enjoy being a member of Starclan so young.
“I didn’t die!” Stormkit said as she nuzzled Dewkit, “I think I must be dreaming…” She looked over to the other cat. It was a brown she-cat with starlight shining in her eyes. The she-cat walked over to Stormkit and gentally placed her tail over Stormkit’s shoulder.
“Hello Stormkit,” She said in a soft voice, “You’ve grown so much since I last saw you. I miss you so much.”
“Who are you?” Stormkit asked. She felt like she had seen this cat before, like it was someone who was a big part of her life. But how could that be? Stormkit knew she had never seen this cat before.
“I’m your mother little Stormkit.” The she-cat seemed so sure, but Stormkit knew that wasn’t true. She stood up and walked over to Eaglekit. Her eyes never came off the she-cat.
“Ashfeather’s my mother!” Stormkit insisted. She could see the sun coming up over the top of the trees. She would need to leave soon.
“Ashfeather has been a great mother for you, but I would have been your mother if I didn’t need to leave so soon.” The she-cat turned her head towards the rising sun. Dewkit and Eaglekit looked at it too, as if it was telling them something. “We need to go now, but remember that life is a gift. Use everything it gives you.”
“Wait Dewkit! Eaglekit! Don’t go!” Stormkit cried but the three cats were already fading away.
“Bye Stormkit!” Stormkit could her sister’s voice echoing in the darkness. She woke up in her nest, the sun was just rising over the tree tops. Even though her siblings were gone, Stormkit was going to do everything she could to help them live on.
Well, that was sad. But Dewkit and Eaglekit will aways be remembered.
